Ekiti State has commenced the construction of an international cargo airport to facilitate the export of agricultural produce and increase foreign earnings.

The cargo airport, according to the State Governor, Kayode Fayemi, will aid in transporting local products interstates as well as export to countries beyond borders.

Kayode who revealed this at a sensitisation workshop of the State Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP), also said that the state will rehabilitate over 1,000km of rural roads across the 16 local government areas to dampen infrastructural challenges.

The governor explained that the construction of the link road was to upscale agriculture which is the forte of the state, adding that the residents who are predominately farmers were underutilized.

He underscored that the rural roads would not only connect farms to cities, but would further enhance the availability of farm produces in March.

“It is in the readiness for sufficient food and cash crops production that will follow the roads inter-connectivity and boost the capacity of Ekiti farmers that the state government is embarking on the construction of cargo airport to help transport our local products to other states and export to other countries”

“The vision of this government is to grow agri-business and open farms up to markets.

“This is why we have decided to embark on the construction of 1000km of rural roads to enhance agribusiness in our dear State”

He added that the government was partnering with the International Development Association, the World Bank and the French Development Agency to fast-track the constructions.
