The Federal Government has affirmed its commitment towards the transformation of Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

It said the country would soon become a global powerhouse in food production and security.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Alhaji Muhammad Sabo Nanono, made the observation on Thursday in Abuja during the inauguration of the Governing Board of the Veterinary Council of Nigeria (VCN).

Nanono said the transformation would happen across all of the sector’s value chain in line with the mandate of the Green Alternative Policy and the Livestock Transformation Agenda of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration.

The Minister charged members of the Council to regulate the standard of the profession in the country.

He also tasked the Board members to be stewards of the trust reposed in them, and to also show responsibility towards the transformation of the agricultural sector.

In his welcome address, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Abdulkadir Mua’zu, said that the Council was very crucial in actualizing many of the activities of the veterinary profession especially its regulatory role.

Mua’zu, who was represented by the Director of the Federal Department of Agriculture in the ministry, Mrs. Karima Babaginda called on the professionals to contribute their quotas to the ministry’s efforts in ensuring food and nutrition security.

Speaking on behalf of the Governing Board, the Chairperson, Commissioner of Police, Dr (Mrs.) Aishatu Abubakar Baru pledged that the Board would work assiduously towards achieving its mandate.
